Everyone asks “which brand is best,” but the sites that last 10+ years usually asked something else: which
texture, which cap chemistry, and which slip method fit the microclimate and traffic?

How We Define “Best” in 2026

Slip (wet)
Colorfastness (ΔE)
Heat under sun
Maintenance hours
Warranty clarity

A glossy board that pops on Instagram can feel slick around a pool by August. A dark tone can look premium on day one—until
the surface runs hot at 2pm. So is the “best” board the one with the highest price tag, or the one that fits the brief you actually have?

Caps & Colors: ASA vs Other Skins

ASA-Capped (weatherable)

  • Typically stronger color/gloss hold in high UV (smaller ΔE drift).
  • Pairs well with matte/open-grain textures for perceived wet grip.
  • But… isn’t uniform cap thickness and bond more critical than headline numbers?

Context on weatherable polymers: ASA overview.

Other Caps (PE/PP variants)

  • Broad range of looks; performance varies by formulation.
  • Glossy emboss can highlight scuffs and films—are cleaning routines budgeted?
  • Color temperature matters: lighter, matte tones tend to run cooler.

Textures & Wet Slip: Methods Aren’t Interchangeable

Use Zone Method Typical Target* What to Ask
Shod traffic (UK/EU) Pendulum (PTV, wet) ≈ ≥36 (project-dependent) Tested on the exact texture. See background: UK HSE pendulum notes here.
Barefoot areas (EU) DIN 51097 (A/B/C) B or C near pools Soapy-water ramp; document detergent and prep.
US facility policy Wet DCOF (procedure stated) Per operator Align with owner’s safety manual and maintenance plan.

*Targets vary by authority/insurer. If the texture changes after tender, should the slip claim still stand?

Heat & Color: Why “Best” Isn’t Always Dark

Dark, glossy caps soak heat and show sunscreen films; matte, light-to-mid tones run cooler and look cleaner longer.
If your deck lives in full sun, would shade plus a lighter tone outperform a prestige charcoal everyone “loves” indoors?

Installer Realities That Decide Outcomes

  • Joist spacing & direction: diagonal and herringbone need tighter centers and blocking.
  • Clip system: choose high-grip near ramps/steps; keep side gaps ~4–6 mm.
  • Drainage: 1–2% falls to channels; never block outlets with pedestals—how soon do planters arrive?
  • Ventilation: ≥50 mm airspace; coastal hardware gets a freshwater rinse after storms.

Shortlist: Best Fits by Scenario

Poolside / Resorts

  • Matte/open-grain texture with documented wet slip.
  • Light/mid colors for heat control.
  • Maintenance contract specifies neutral-pH cleaning.

Balconies / Rooftops

  • Lightweight build-up over pedestals; wind-uplift restraint.
  • Assembly fire evidence per jurisdiction.
  • Clear door thresholds and drainage paths drawn.

FAQ (things people hint at rather than ask)

Is the priciest cap automatically the best?

Uniform cap coverage, bond integrity, and the chosen texture often matter more than price alone.

Do big-box boards equal pro-only lines?

Sometimes spans, cap, and color sets differ. Compare datasheets, not just swatches.

What if my slip method isn’t named in the tender?

Expect mismatched results. Name the method and the exact texture to be supplied.
