Pretty swatches don’t keep wet feet safe. If the slip method, drainage, edges and cleaning plan aren’t drawn,
you’re approving boards—not a pool deck. Copy these checks into your RFQ.

11 Checks Before You Approve Pool Decking (2026)
TL;DR — pool decks that actually work
- Slip is a method + texture: use DIN 51097 (A/B/C) for barefoot zones; wet Pendulum PTV for shod walkways; results must name the exact emboss. Background: HSE slips.
- Finish & film: choose matte/open-grain textures; glossy caps show sunscreen/oil films and feel slick sooner.
- Drainage & edges: give water a path (1–2% falls) and use bullnose/picture-frame at the waterline and steps.
- Our evidence (for submittals): wet slip AS 4586 P5 / R13; MOR ≈ 44 MPa, MOE ≈ 2600 MPa; absorption <1%, swell <0.1%; freeze–thaw/high–low cycles ~±10%. See Why CopoSurface.
11 Checks (copy into your tender)
| # | Check | What to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Slip method + texture | DIN 51097 (A/B/C) for barefoot; Pendulum/DCOF for walkways, on the exact emboss | “Slip resistant” alone isn’t comparable |
| 2 | Finish | Matte/open-grain textures; avoid glossy in wet/shaded zones | Films form faster on gloss |
| 3 | Drainage falls | 1–2% to channels; no pedestals on outlets; inspection access | Stops ponding/algae at the waterline |
| 4 | Edges & nosings | Picture-frame/bullnose; step nosings coordinated | Safe barefoot transitions |
| 5 | Heat & color | Light/mid tones; shade plan | Comfort and film behavior |
| 6 | Maintenance SLA | Neutral-pH cleaning cadence; responsibilities written | Maintains wet grip & look |
| 7 | Gaps | Clip-controlled 4–6 mm; end gaps by temperature | Clean lines, drainage, expansion |
| 8 | Subframe near pools | Aluminum rails; stainless fixings; avoid corrosion traps | Longevity in wet/chemical zones |
| 9 | Chemical exposure | Sunscreen/chlorine/soft drinks & cleaning compatibility | Films kill grip; avoid harsh residues |
| 10 | Access & steps | Threshold heights, nosings, tactile where required | Operator safety & code |
| 11 | Ventilation & drying | ≥50 mm airspace; fascia breathes; no boxed corners | Faster dry-out; odor control |

FAQ — quick, copyable answers
Is glossy composite acceptable around pools?
It can pass visually, but glossy surfaces show films and feel slick sooner. Matte/open-grain with neutral-pH cleaning is steadier.
Do lighter colors really run cooler?
Yes, generally. Combine color with shade planning for best comfort.
What cleaning products should I specify?
Neutral-pH cleaners; avoid waxes/oils/sealers that leave films. Write the cadence and products into the SLA.
